Is there an industry average that is paid for customer care work? If so what is the typical profit margin that the vendor makes on top of their expenses?

It depends on where the work is done and the size of the operations.
in the UK, acceptable margins would be around 10% (the industry averages 8,5%). Offshore work commands up to 35%-40% Ebit!
